Tuesday. Is it?

17:51 Time for a beer. A quick beer. I’m off on a rare excursion to the outside world to someone’s house to play guitar. It’s almost like real life.

In other news, I left my phone in the pub yesterday evening and won’t get it back until tomorrow. It’s slightly odd not to have it with me, particularly as it’s effectively my wallet, but quite reassuring that apart from not being able to take a phone call, lofe has carried on as usual.

It’s that time of day when I ask myself what I’ve been doing today, and often struggle to answer. Thinking back now and can remember the day starting with notification emails to do with a seemingly simple error. The solution to the error, however, opened a rather old can of worms which took several hours to reseal. One of my client projects needed reorganising and some re-coding. After that I decided to extend the error reporting system by adding 404 errors - something that used to be a standard component.

I’m getting back into errors and logs - all part of good performance monitoring. I might even revisit reading server logs and reading them into a database. This is an old school process that seemed to fall out of fashion when Google started offering its analytics service. Why crunch through server logs when Google can present you with fancy report showing your key conversion metrics.

Analysing conversions from ad-click to checkout is important, of course. However, a third-party javascript plug-in can’t tell you everything - they miss visits from robots and script-kiddies scanning for vulnerabilities. They miss most requests for static resources like JavaScript and CSS files, whether they exists or not.

If I’m going to have another before the guitar comes out, it needs ot be a quick one. I could go now, but I think I need a little linger to get the day’s code-wars out of my system.

So, a quick look back at yesterday’s post and the word ‘tickets’ has reminded me of something. I have a few tickets on one of my main projects, and I think I saw them briefly earlier, but it’s all a bit of blur now. I need to keep trying to remember things though. The big things. The plan. The key is still comms - which is something I made progress on yesterday: web-based messages. Perhaps I should put that in big text to act as a reminder tomorrow…
